Sir Thomas joins in church bicentenary
SIR Thomas Ingilby joined in the 200th anniversary celebrations at St Joseph's Church in Bishop Thornton.
He met former parish priest Monsignor John Dunne, who returned to St Joseph's to launch "A Constant People", his history of one of England's oldest Catholic parishes.
The Ingilby family, who have lived at nearby Ripley Castle for 700 years, have long and special links with the parish, which dates from the late Middle Ages.
Sir Thomas and Lady Ingilby travelled to Rome in 1987 for the beatification by Pope Paul VI of his collateral ancestor, Francis Ingilby, spiritual adviser to Saint Margaret Clitherow. Blessed Francis was put to death on York Knavesmire in 1586.
Sir Thomas described his invitation to the beatification ceremony as "one of the most wonderful experiences of my life."
As part of the bicentenary celebrations, shelves bearing heraldic crests been installed beneath the church's much-admired stained glass windows.
