Service to remember the fallen

An annual parade and service was held on Sunday to commemorate young airmen who died in the Second World War.

The service, which has been held at Stonefall Cemetary for the last 60 years, saw Air Cadets from Harrogate, Knaresborough, Wetherby and Ripon pay their 
respects, and dignitaries 
laying a total of 17 
wreaths.

A large number of the men of bomber command in the Second World War died in Harrogate General Hospital. They were based at airfields in Yorkshire, primarily Linton on Ouse.

Of their 1017 graves 
at Stonefall, 666 are Canadians, 224 from the UK, with 
the rest made up of Australians, New Zealanders, 
Russians and Germans.

The event was supported by the Mayor and Mayoress of Harrogate, the MP for 
Harrogate and Knaresborough, Menwith Hill, both RAF and USAF the Royal Canadian Air Force, the RAF Association Yorkshire Region, and Harrogate and District, and Doncaster branches, the Royal British Legion Harrogate and Wetherby, the Jewish Association, and North Yorkshire Police.

A total of 16 Standards were on parade with the Northern Area standard leading the way, supported by the Region Standard and the American Honour Guard./

The service was led by Canon Tony Shepherd from St Peter’s Church, and supported by the church choir.
