Today’s generation of schoolchildren welcomed a special visitor to kick off their centenary celebrations.

Pupils at Sicklinghall welcomed the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire Lord Crathorne to plant an oak tree from the Queen’s estate as part of their Jubilee Woods Tree Planting Challenge to mark the school’s 100th year.

School governor Justine Gaunt said: “To launch our 100th year, we invited Lord Crathorne to the school to plant the oak and he very kindly agreed to attend, although he told me that this was the first visit of its kind that he has made in 13 years of being Lord Lieutenant!

“All the children had the opportunity to speak to Lord Crathorne and most of them had questions for him - such as what it was like to meet the Queen.

“And there were lots of questions about his ceremonial sword - he attended the school in his official uniform, with spurs and sword, which was absolutely fascinating for the children.”

During his visit Lord Crathorne, who is the Queen’s representative for the county, talked to the children about his various roles and duties during a special assembly.

Justine added: “Sicklinghall School was founded in 1913 as a place of education for the children of local farm workers, and even today, some of the children are the sons and daughters of local farmers!”
