Residents discover an artistic streak

ARTISTIC residents at Borrage House in Ripon have been putting the final touches to their paintings before they go on display at the care home.

With the help of activities co-ordinator Tracy Durkan, the residents have been painting subjects close to their hearts which include a sunset, a field of flowers and a derelict barn, plus various patterns.

"The paintings will be such a stunning statement in the lounge area where everyone visiting will be able to see them," said Tracy.

'powerful'

"It's powerful because it represents the individuality of each resident, their likes and their creativity. The residents love painting because they enjoy an activity where they can express themselves."

The home's weekly painting classes are part of an ongoing programme of activities for the residents which has also included participation in a national Christmas cake competition and other arts and crafts classes.

Eileen Atkinson, 91, who has lived at Borrage House for four years, said she liked painting because it was a relaxing pastime. "I painted the flowers and mountains because it reminds me of my holidays in Canada," she said.

'amazed'

Her friend, May Borgen, 94, who has not painted since her school days, said she was amazed at the results.

"I thought my paintings would be atrocious but I'm really pleased with how they look.

"I decided to paint a ramshackled barn because I like the photograph I'm working from. I'm very proud that my work will be on display for everyone to see," she said.
