VISITORS are to have access to Harewood Castle for the first time after conservation work took place on the Grade I listed 14th century ruin.

Thanks to funding from the Harewood Estate, English Heritage and Yorkshire Television, a sign-posted route will be open to the public tomorrow, Saturday, to take people around the village to the structure which has been in ruin since the mid 17th century.

Jennifer Auty, head of learning at Harewood House Trust said: “As an Educational Charitable Trust our aim is not just to maintain, conserve and provide access to what we have but also to ensure that we offer an insight into how Harewood evolved and became what it is today.

“The Harewood Castle Walk is a great addition to our visitor offer, an opportunity to walk round a romantic ruin or to learn more about what life would have been like inside it.”

David Lascelles and Diane Howse, Earl and Countess of Harewood, who have been closely involved with the project, said: “We would like to thank Peter Pace of Pace Architects and archaeologist Ed Dennison for their hard work and professional expertise and English Heritage and Yorkshire Television for their financial support.”

Simon Thurley, chief executive of English Heritage, said: “Visitors will not only be able to see the effigies of the castle’s medieval owners in Harewood church, but will also be able to enjoy the Turner views which are still at Harewood House.”
