ART from Wetherby inmates went on show at Boston Spa Methodist Church last weekend to mark Prisons Week.
The display of work including paintings and sculptures by HMP Wealstun and Wetherby Young Offenders’ Institute was hailed a success.
One of the organisers Judith England said: “We hope to repeat the exhibition next year.
“The exhibition attracted a number of people and Martin Greaves, learning and skills manager at Wealstun, gave a short talk during the Sunday service.
“This was very interesting and showed the positive side of what is being done to help reduce re-offending.
“Donations amounted to more than £90.
“The money will be used to buy art materials for the Young Offenders’ Unit and HMP Wealstun.”
HMP Wealstun prisons displayed a range of art work. The carpentry and plastering workshops provided examples of work from the Construction diploma courses and models made in ‘down time’ were provided by a prisoner working in the sewing machine repair shop.
Wetherby Young Offenders Institute also displayed a variety of art work, some of which was part of the Young Offenders’ GCSE portfolio.
There was also an impressive display of sculptures produced around the theme of Heroes.
Both prisons displayed details about the type of courses that try to engage prisoners to improve their literacy and numeracy and other work skills.
