A Wetherby mum-of-two has put herself through a hair-raising experience for charity.

Colette Airey, 31, of Ainsty Road, Wetherby, had her locks chopped off in front of a team of supporters at Harrogate District Hospital last Thursday.

Healthcare Assistant Colette, who works on the maternity ward at Harrogate District Hospital, had 10 inches of locks lopped off in support of cancer patients.

The unit provides medical day treatment for patients such as chemotherapy.

Colette told the News: “I was very young when my friend lost their mum to cancer, and I think cancer is something that is close to many peoples hearts.

“Before (the cut) I was very very nervous, but on the day there were lots and lots of faces and I was fine.

“It has been very worthwhile and I have had a lot of support these past six weeks.”

Colette, who has raised nearly £3,000 for the cancer unit, says she now wants to raise as much money as possible for the cause.

The 31-year-old has also donated her hair to The Little Princess Trust - a UK based charity which provides real hair wigs for children suffering hair loss.

Colette said: “By doing this I hope to show solidarity with patients who have lost their hair.

“I am excited about trying out a few different styles on the way. I have a wig but I will probably forget about wearing it.

“Having a shaved head is a good conversation starter too.”
