Lions and Tigers roar on to score for kid’s hospice

In an exciting new arrangement, Wetherby Tigers Under-11s football squad have teamed up with Wetherby District Lions Club in a joint bid to support Martin House.

For the last three years the Tigers have proudly worn the name of the children’s hospice on their shirts to promote the Clifford-based charity’s work with youngsters who have life-limiting illnesses.

After outgrowing their old shirts the footballers were determined to continue the unique sponsorship arrangement and raised some money for new kit but didn’t have enough for all 38 players.

“We had put together some funds ourselves,” explained coach Dave Bock, “but we didn’t have enough to kit out all 38 boys with their own shirt.

“That’s when the Lions stepped into help us out.

“Now each of our squad can have their own shirt and continue to promote Martin House.’

Lioins Welfare Chairman Jenny Wade said they were delighted to help.

“It’s such a great and innovative idea and means we can help one of our favourite local charities as well as young people from the Wetherby community. It’s a win win win.”

Martin House Children’s Hospice supports terminally ill children and teenagers and their families by offering respite care on the purpose-built site at Clifford.

The facility last year celebrated its 25th anniversary but faces a constant battle to self finance its services.

Sarah Tarpey, Martin House Community Fundraiser for West Yorkshire, is delighted with the support offered by the two clubs: “Martin House has enjoyed a strong partnership with the Wetherby team for three years now, and they have worked incredibly hard to promote our cause, helping us raise money towards our annual running costs of almost £5 million.

“We’re so pleased that we can continue this partnership with such a great team of people.”

The coaches can now start the task of buying the new shirts in time for next season.

The new shirts will promote Martin House and Wetherby Lions Club throughout the region when the players play matches in the Harrogate, Leeds and York area next season.
