Library hours cuts debated

A CONSULTATION has started over plans to cut opening hours at two North Yorkshire libraries.

North Yorkshire County Council is looking at reducing the times at Sherburn-in-Elmet and Tadcaster libraries as part of a cost-cutting exercise.

Sherburn would see its opening hours cut from 39 to 30, while Tadcaster will see its reduced less dramatically from 20 hours to 18.

Chairman of Sherburn in Elmet parish council, Bob Packham, told the Wetherby News he was opposed to the hours being cut.

He said: “Myself and the parish council are unhappy with this decision for a number of reasons.

“I think there are a number of issues with the number of libraries being cut. The first is that the hours proposed do not suit the settlement and the size of the area.

“The hours are also increasingly unflexibile for people that work and have jobs.

“And the other issue is regarding the voluntarily plans put forward, we really do not want people doing volunteer jobs which people are currently being paid to do.

“I feel there has not been much room for negotiation on this consultation.”

“The feedback I have had from residents is the same - we all think it is a real shame that this proposal is being put forward.”

Currently Sherburn in Elmet residents can take part in the consultation which includes two options for opening hours.

The closing date to provide feedback is on January 31 with the new opening hours due to take affect on June 2012.
