Jubilee events around district
THIS week the Wetherby News can reveal some of the events taking place around the district to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year.
The Diamond Jubilee- marking 60 years of the Queen’s reign – will see celebrations take place across Britain over the first weekend of June.
The Queen, who came to the throne on February 6, 1952, celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002.
Celebrations in Wetherby will kick off with an opening ceremony outside the Wetherby Town Hall steps at 10.30am on Saturday, June 2.
Throughout the day a range of activities has been organised by the Wetherby Jubilee Committee which will include a mini-tennis session, the Wetherby Lions beer festival and street entertainment.
From 4pm a Battle of the Bands and hog-roast will take place at the Sports Association near the Ings.
Entertainment will be provided by the Wetherby Silver Band and Wetherby High School pupils.
Wetherby, which is twinned with the French town of Privas, will see its twinned town visitors come over to join in the celebrations, adding a touch of cosmopolitan to the festivities.
A display of memorabilia covering the 60 years of the Queen’s reign will be held in the town hall, with Wetherby Women’s Institute providing refreshments.
On Sunday, a street party is planned for midday, with picnic tables and five different bands playing throughout covering a range of music including brass and jazz classics.
Friends of Sandringham Park are organising a decorated bicycle parade and competition to replicate the one held for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
The parade, which leaves the town hall at 10.30am will make its way down to the Ings.
Rounding off the day will be a 1950s-style sports day complete with egg-and-spoon race for children.
The grand finale will be Diamond Jubilee Last Night of the Proms spectacular, with tickets for the much anticipated event on sale next month.
As revealed by the Wetherby News last week, the venue has now changed from the Wilderness to the Ings.
Chairman of the Diamond Jubilee Committee, Cindy Bentley, said the move was to provide a larger stage to accommodate the Leeds Symphony Orchestra, who will be performing on the night.
Tickets for this event will go on sale from next month at various locations or online at www.wetherbydiamondjubilee.org,uk and at a Box Office in the Garden of Rest each Saturday in May.
Meanwhile in Boston Spa the village will be celebrating with a whole range of events over the weekend including a Jubilee jazz night at Boston Spa Village Hall on Saturday.
Other activities will include a village picnic at the village hall on Stables Lane at 7pm include children’s face painting, ice cream van and Punch and Judy show.
There will also be a hog roast from Firth Butchers, finishing with fireworks at 10.30pm.
On Saturday there will be a Boston Spa Gala Parade featuring Jubilee fancy dress themed costumes, tickets will be available from Easter.
Tadcaster will welcome the royal occasion with a host of activities, ranging from a carnival parade of floats and a family barbecue to a massive firework display and lighting of the beacon.
A committee of volunteers has prepared a packed program of events, which will start next month with a Carnival Queen Competition at Magnet Sports and Social Club on Friday March, 23.

On Sunday, June 3, the road through the town will be closed to allow for a parade of 25 floats to move from Lawton Ford Garage to the Magnet Sports and Social Club.
This will be followed by the crowning of the Carnival Queen, a best float competition, a funfair, a dog display, marching bands and local bands and a pastoral blessing.
Barwick and Scholes will welcome a host of events including a Gala day at Bardsey Cricket Ground which will include a local derby between Bardsey County Council and Scholes County Council, taking place at Barwick Cricket ground on Monday June 4.
Other activities taking place will include welly throwing, a pushchair race, football dribbling races, a bouncy castle and an evening beacon-lighting ceremony at Hall Tower Field.
