Incinerator protests fall on deaf ears

Waiting for Video...

Campaigners have vowed to fight on after North Yorkshire County Council gave the go ahead to plans for a multi-million pound waste incinerator.

The Allerton Park scheme, between Knaresborough and Boroughbridge, was approved at a council planning committee meeting on Tuesday.

But opponents have reacted angrily to the decision and pledged to continue their battle by calling for an inquiry into the scheme. Anthony Long, chairman of the parish council in Marton cum Grafton, one of the villages closest to the site, condemned the decision.

He said: “This is a bad decision for North Yorkshire and a decision this county will regret. It’s bad for the environment, bad for the economy and bad for the future.

“The next step is to get away from county hall and away from the politics of North Yorkshire County Council and their vested interest in approving this and we go to public inquiry.

“I hope, and many people in North Yorkshire hope, that when that happens the right decision will be taken and will come up with a proper waste strategy which delivers environmental sustainability at a realistic cost.”
