Hospice's 'step out as the sun rises' call to fundraisers

PEOPLE in the Ripon area are being asked to get behind a brand new fundraising event being organised specially for them.

The Saint Michael's Sunrise Walk, a six- mile sponsored stroll from Sawley village hall to Ripon Cathedral, will be held for the first time this year as the sun rises at about 6am on the morning of Sunday, September 26.

The event will raise funds for Saint Michael's, the local charity providing specialist care and support to people living with terminal illness and bereavement in Ripon and the surrounding areas.

'very important'

Tony Collins, chief executive of the charity, said: "Recent figures show there has been a 10 per cent increase in the number of people from Ripon benefiting from the services offered by Saint Michael's since 2007.

"It is very important to Saint Michael's that we are able to help as many people as possible and we want people living in the Ripon area to know that we are their local hospice and we are there should they need us.

"This new fundraising event will complement the wonderful support we receive from local individuals and businesses, Saint Michael's Ripon shop and our volunteer fundraising groups."

Leaving Sawley village hall as the sun starts to rise, participants of all ages will follow a six-mile route that takes in the stunning sights of Ripon and its surrounding areas, including Studley Deer Park and Fountains Hall. The route ends at Ripon Cathedral where walkers will be welcomed with a celebratory breakfast.

'unique'

"The event offers a unique opportunity to see the sun rise over Ripon's most iconic and beautiful landmarks and will be a fun experience to share with friends and family," said Mr Collins.

"Saint Michael's Sunrise Walk is an opportunity for the Ripon community to join together and show their support for local families living with terminal illness and bereavement."

It costs just 9 to register, but organisers are hoping that participants will raise as much as possible through personal sponsorship. Saint Michael's Sunrise Walk is supported by locally-based accountancy practice, Eura Audit UK.

For further information about the event, or to register your place, call into Saint Michael's shop at 6 North Street, Ripon, or contact Saint Michael's charity on 01423 879 687 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
