Students at a Harewood school made a special trip to St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds as part of an educational awards scheme.

Gateways School year nine students visited St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds as part of The Archbishop of York Youth Trust Young Leaders Award Scheme on January 25.

The school is supporting The Archbishop of York Youth Trust as one of its charities during the year.

Year eight and nine pupils are also taking part in the Trust’s Young Leaders Award Scheme.

The Trust, set up in 2009 by Dr John Sentamu, is a grant-making programme that supports and partners a number of projects working with young people in deprived areas across the north.

The Young Leaders Award combines classroom learning with practical projects focussed on community action, and to make a positive contribution to their community.

Jane Foster, head of Community Outreach at Gateways School, said: “The students were given a brief tour of the hospice and its award-winning gardens and then took part in a quiz which revealed some of the facts and figures associated with the running of the charity.

“Many pupils were surprised to learn that it costs £23,500 per day to run the hospice and that the charity has over 600 volunteers.”
