A Harewood schoolgirl has been rewarded for her charity work with a top honour from the Rotary Club of Leeds.

Gateways Year 8 student Hannah Matharoo was presented with the Service Above Self Award by the Lord Mayor of Leeds Ann Castle, along with other outstanding pupil from the area at a ceremony in the Civic Hall last week.

Hannah said: “It was really inspiring going to the awards ceremony and hearing about what other young people have been doing to help change the lives of others, such as visiting the elderly and working with children with disabilities.

“It has inspired me to carry on helping others.”

High schools throughout Leeds are invited by the Rotary Club to nominate a candidate who has shown outstanding conduct to others.

Hannah was nominated by Gateways for working on her own initiative to support the school’s charity through her activities outside of school.

These have included donating to the charity the proceeds of a birthday party and sponsorship money from completing the Three Peaks Walk.

Headteacher Dr Tracy Johnson said: “We are extremely proud of Hannah’s achievements in receiving this award.

“Her mature, thoughtful and generous actions in supporting the school charity through her own initiative mean that she is a very deserving recipient.”

Hannah attended the ceremony with her parents, accompanied by Mrs Jane Foster, Head of Community Outreach at Gateways.

Each pupil nominated for an award was invited to choose a book (or books) from a Leeds bookshop to the value of £30 which was presented to them, together with a certificate of achievement, by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Ann Castle.
