Gymnasts shine at county competition

YOUNG gymnasts from the Wetherby district have been proving they are the champions of the future by winning top awards.

Joanne Stephenson, nine, from Tockwith, was awarded gold for her floor performance at the Featherstone Annual Gymnastics Competition.

She was also given bronze for the vault competition and took silver overall for the Under 9s floor and vault category, beating off competition from across West Yorkshire.

Meanwhile, Wetherby's Joanna Diggle, 12, is celebrating huge success at the event, her first major competition. She entered for the over 12s floor and vault and walked away with three gold medals.

The girls' success contributed to team medals for the North Leeds Gymnastics Academy where they train. The over 12s floor and vault team took silver, as did the over 12s novice team. The team of eight-year-olds entered in the under 9s floor and vault competition won bronze, while the team of nine-year-olds took silver.

Head coach Lisa Davis said the competition had been a success for all her members, who won an impressive 26 medals in total.

She said: "The girls had a superb weekend and demonstrated to the whole of West Yorkshire how talented they really are. We were hoping for a few medals but to bring back 26 medals is amazing - we are all over the moon!"
