Eco minded youngsters at a Tadcaster school are flying the green flag with a new mission.

Riverside pupils have been recycling paper, batteries, printer parts, etc for some time but now they aim to send nothing at all to landfill.

Headteacher Ian Yapp said: “It’s not just about what we are doing for the environment as a school, more it’s the messages this kind of work gives to our students – think local, act global.”

Riverside are involved in the Eco-Schools project and are one of just a few nationally that have been accredited twice through this scheme, with the prestigious Green Flag flying high in the school hall.

As part of their work, they have been looking at both waste and how green their policies are.
Mr Yapp added: “They already recycle paper, batteries, printer parts, etc but wanted to do something about the rest of their waste.

“With that in mind, from January they have gone nought per cent to landfill, using specialist contractors to remove their waste which goes off to a massive recycling facility guaranteeing nought per cent to landfill.”

The school is now looking to work with local businesses to help pursuade them to develop their eco-credentials to aid the environment.
