Dogs feared stolen discovered drowned

TWO dogs who went missing from Barwick in Elmet and were feared stolen have been found drowned.

The bodies of Border terrier Meg and Jack Russell terrier Pepper were recovered from a sewerage works in the village last Friday.

Meg's distraught owner Claire Murray, from Sherburn in Elmet, said she had received a phone-call from the RSPCA to say they had been called to the works where a lot of work was being done.

She said: "They had gone out and scanned Meg and were able to identify her as she was chipped. My partner went over to identify Pepper although there was no need to do that as we knew it would be as they were best friends."

Claire said the RSPCA believed they had been chasing a rabbit and had fallen into the tank as the surface was covered by grass.

She said: "They were just doing what dogs do. We managed to get their bodies back and we have buried them in the small holding in Barwick in Elmet where they used to play together.

Meg and Pepper went missing together on February 26 and Claire and Pepper's owner, Yvonne Warner, from Aberford, tried everything possible to find them. This included organising searches, posting details on websites, putting up posters and placing notices in newspapers.

Claire said: "Without everybody's help and support I don't know how we would have kept going. The amount of messages we have received from everyone since they were found has been tremendous.

"The advice I would give to people who have lost their dogs is to just keep going and try to think positive. That's what we have been doing for the past seven weeks."

The dogs were featured in the Wetherby News last month when nine dogs disappeared across the district in February alone and it was believed an organised gang was operating in the area.

Claire said: "At least we know where they are now. At least we know they are not being abused or mistreated.

"Hopefully now, once I sort myself out, we can get on with life as best we can but we will never forget them."
