TEMPERATURES plummeted as snow fell on the Wetherby district last weekend and more is forecast for the coming days.

Snow started falling on Saturday afternoon in the Wetherby area with around 5cm across the district, bringing traffic disruption and delays, despite the picture perfect weather.

This snowy scene published in this week’s Wetherby News was captured on camera by retired prison officer and Wetherby resident Jud Goodwin.

He was enjoying an early Sunday morning walk with his wife Maggie, when he took this photograph.

He said: “I took the photographs quite early, just as you could see the sunrise in the background. There were lots of people out enjoying the morning, lots of dog walkers. I was quite surprised.

“It was absolutely lovely and I enjoy taking pictures of scenery and weather so I just decided to take a few snaps.”

While dog walkers and sledgers made the most of the weather, cancellations and delays brought disruption to the area.

Wetherby Racecourse officials last Friday abandoned the Totepool Irish Day meeting planned for the following day because of frost.

On Monday morning delays were caused after an accident on the A1(M), between junctions 47 and 48, caused heavy traffic congestion around Wetherby Town Centre during the morning commute.

On Tuesday night, the lowest temperature recorded in England was at Church Fenton in North Yorkshire, where the temperature plummeted to -11.8.

Weather conditions are expected to remain cold, though dryer weather is likely over the weekend with a chance of snow today, Friday.

A Met Office spokesman said: “The outlook for the weekend is going to remain cold, we could see temperatures as low as -5 or -10 at night but we are expecting the rest of the weekend to be sunny and clear.”

“We may see some sleet and snow today, Friday, in the area. It will, however, remain icy on roads.”

Throughout the current cold snap the Department of Health advised people to check forecasts for the latest information before venturing out.
