Community welcomes new Wetherby Baptist Church

A WETHERBY church is ringing the changes as it starts a new chapter in its life.

Barleyfields Church has moved from the community centre in Barleyfields Road to Deighton Gates Primary School.

And, to mark its link with the Yorkshire Baptist Association, it is changing its name to Wetherby Baptist Church.

Far from simply offering a room for a few hours each Sunday, Deighton Gates headteacher Jeremy Dunford was keen for the church to play a part in the life of the school.

He said: "When the church leaders inquired about using the school as a venue, I could see the wider potential for such a relationship. I am very pleased that the church wants to play a full part in the school community and be more than just a tenant."

The church has already held two of its services at the school and Arthur Probert, one of the church leaders, said things were going well.

"We're very excited," he said. "We're looking forward to seeing how things develop and I'm sure there are good things in store."

Church secretary Roger Dyson said: "We have been delighted with the enthusiasm and welcome the school have shown us. We are looking forward to our contribution to school life evolving over time and to working with the staff, PTA and governors."

Visitors will be welcome and the church's new home at Deighton Gates Primary School, Deighton Road, where Sunday services are held at 10am.
