Wheels have been set in motion to boost the funds of Martin House Children’s Hospice.

A group of seven friends are to cycle coast to coast from Maryport to Tynemouth setting out on May 30.

The cyclists, lead by Beeston Primary headteacher Chris Lees and international triathlete Graham Plews recently called in at the Boston Spa-based hospice and were given a good send off by Emmerdale actor Jeff Hordley (Cain Dingle) who was there to launch the bid and sign autographs.

The Coast to Coast sponsored cycle ride, which aims to boost funds in the hospice’s 25th year, was organised by a father of a Martin House boy.

On the same day the rugby league Carnegie Challenge Cup visited the hospice thanks to supporters Leeds Metropolitan University’s security department.

Sarah Tarpey, Community Fundraiser, said: “All our children and families were thrilled to be part of the Carnegie Challenge Cup story for even a short time.

“Events like these really brighten the lives of our children and families, and we are indebted to Leeds Metropolitan University for their support.”

Martin House provides care and support to hundreds of local children with life-limiting illnesses, and their families.

This year is Martin House’s 25th Anniversary year, and total operating costs will be some £4.9 million, the vast majority of which has to be raised from public and private donations.

She added: “Both children and adults alike were delighted to be able to see and touch the Cup at first hand, to hold it for a short time, and to have their picture taken alongside the trophy.”

Other events to mark the 25th year of Martin House include a dragon boat race at Roundhay Park in Leeds.
