Schoolchildren from Boston Spa took part in an innovative church heritage trail as part of a high-profile nationwide scheme.

The trail, which took place at St Mary’s Church, involved a questionnaire to guide the children around the grade 11-listed building’s most interesting and unusual features.

Around 20 pupils from St Mary’s C of E Primary School took part in the trail on Wednesday February 6, which included looking at features such as pews, stained glass windows and the church’s exterior. Boston Spa resident Jane Hedley, who helped create the trail, said the children got a real “buzz” from taking part in the education project.

She said: “It is absolutely brilliant for the children and they get a real buzz from it.

“They can explore and look at all the different features.

“These trails are now quite high-profile now and are an excellent idea.”

Jane, a church member, has also volunteered and helped created trails in Bramham, as well as a church in Bow, East London, during the London 2012 Olympics, which was used to encourage more visitors.

The church volunteer had the idea of the trail and helped create it with the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS).

The trail is part of an education programme to encourage children and their families to learn about architecture, history and furnishings in churches.
