Boost for wildlife trust with conservation grant
East Keswick Wildlife Trust has been given a boost after it was awarded a grant to help conservation work at East Keswick Marsh.
The trust announced that it has been awarded a Community Landfill Tax Grant this week.
The grant is specifically for conservation work in East Keswick Marsh, which is managed by the Wildlife Trust on behalf of the owners, East Keswick Parish Council.
And the cash will enable the Wildlife Trust to re-dig the three ponds which have silted up,
It will also go towards helping remove some alder trees, coppice the hazel and cut back scrub which has encroached into the open flowering areas of the Marsh over the past 20 years.
Some of the non native trees and shrubs that were planted by the builders on completion of Church Drive and Keswick Grange will also be removed and replaced with native species which will be more beneficial for wildlife.
“Although some of this work may at first appear rather destructive, it will ultimately benefit wildlife and improve public access,” a spokesman for the trust said.
Keswick Marsh, a six acre area of wet pasture, is one of the few examples left locally of a semi-natural wet pasture with accompanying rich flora and fauna.
East Keswick Wildlife Trust, a village-based charity, was founded in the early 1990s and owns and manages considerable pieces of lands within the parish boundary.
The body has provided a stimulus to the care of the environment felt far beyond the 40-plus acres of rich wildlife it presides over.
The work will be carried out over the next few months, mainly during the popular Friday work parties.
