Bonfire tradition in village up in smoke

FIFTEEN years of family bonfire tradition in South Milford is about to go up in smoke.

The popular village bonfire, organised by the Osgoldcross and Elmet Rotary Club, is moving to nearby village Monk Fryston due to newly enforced health and safety regulations.

Enjoyed by thousands of people every year, the annual event has switched location because its traditional venue at Batty's Field is no longer deemed suitable.

The bonfire will now be held in Monk Fryston village centre with access to it opposite the school.

John Fleming, chairman of the bonfire committee, said: “We think the new bonfire site will prove to be an excellent, safe spectator arena, offering superb views of what promises to be a fantastic fireworks display.

“In addition we are providing several fields near to the bonfire arena to enable cars to be parked safely off the road for free.”

Ray Newton, chairman of the Monk Fryston and Hillam Community Association, said: “Whilst the search continues for a new site in the South Milford area, the voluntary groups of Monk Fryston are delighted to staff and host the event this year alongside the regular team of Rotary and South Milford volunteers.

“More organisations than ever will benefit from the funds raised and all the proceeds will go back into the two village communities via a wide range of projects.”

The joint village bonfire will replace the usual Monk Fryston bonfire held at the community centre.

The bonfire will be held on Saturday, November 8, with gates opening at 6pm. It will feature the usual attractions, including a big bonfire, an amazing fireworks display, refreshments and stalls selling bonfire night fayre.

Tickets cost 5 in advance and will be on sale from October 10. Tickets bought on the night will cost 7.50. Check the South Milford website: www.southmilford.co.uk for details of where to buy tickets.
