Harrogate Rotarians Peter Ellis, Alan Wallace, President Tony Hill, Terry Knowles and Bob Richardson launch their Bicycle Recyling Scheme. 090603GS1.

Unwanted bikes are being collected in Harrogate next month to help change lives abroad.

Rotary club of Harrogate will be holding two bike collection sessions as part of its Bicycle Recycling Scheme at Harrogate Rugby Club, Claro Road on Saturday, March 9 and Saturday, March 16.

The bikes, which can be any sort will be refurbished then distributed locally and accross the globe. Previous bike collections have seen more than 900 bikes collected. Some of the bikes sent abroad are fully refurbished by youngsters at the Meanwood Valley Urban Farm in Leeds.

Club co-ordinator Tony Hill said: “We are keen to receive any type, age and size of bike in children or adult sizes.

“It doesn’t matter about the condition of the bike as each one is fully refurbished before we send it overseas.”

Some bikes are distributed locally with lightweight racing type bikes recycled by the community based Bike Rescue Project in York which provides employment for local people, Mr Hill said.

Bradford based Margaret Carey Foundation also is a partner in the scheme. The foundation finds community and prison based projects. Inmates nearing the end of their sentences work on the bikes as part of their rehabilitation programme.

These bikes are distributed by other charities to developing countries. Mr Hill said: “A large consignment will go to Africa to be used by young people to enable them to attend school or college, where otherwise they might not be able to get there.”

The Rotary based charity Convoy to the Ukraine distributes them in the Ukraine.

Mr Hill said the Rotary Club is happy to arrange for bikes to be donated to worthwhile causes or individuals across the district.

Anyone who would like to donate a bike but is no able to get to the bike collection days can arrange to have it collected by calling Mr Hill on 01765 677778 or email: tony@kingwoodhouse.plus.com
