A Tadcaster resident suffering from an inoperable brain tumour has raised thousands of pounds for Brain Tumour Research.

Chris Devine, 49, was a builder until an accident three years ago severed his spinal cord.

He was then diagnosed with advanced head and neck cancer in July 2012.

He has since undergone intensive treatment at St James’s Hospital in Leeds, for the duration of which he was hospitalised.

But on Saturday December 15 he was joined by 40 friends and family who pushed him in a wheelchair all the way from York’s Parliament Street to Tadcaster bus station.

The evening saw him host a disco at The Riley Smith Hall, which was attended by 320 people.

Here, a raffle of donated prizes from local businesses swelled the money raised, which included memberships to Tadcaster Leisure Centre and manicure vouchers.

Chris said: “At first, we were hoping to raise £2,000 to £2,500.

“But with all the support, we might be looking at £4,500 to £5,000.”

He added: “The support from Tadcaster has been immense.

“All the people who did the walk and donated raffle prizes; its overwhelming.”

His desire to help other sufferers was fuelled by the knowledge that Brain Tumour Research receives only one per cent of funds raised into cancer, despite brain tumours killing more people under 40 than any other cancer.

His sister, Kay Place, 46, said the support that received was “phenomenal” and that the day was “absolutely brilliant”.

She added that Chris was “over the moon” with the generosity of the community.

Brain Tumour Research was set up in 2008 to raise funds for other brain tumour charities, support patients and carers and raise funds for research into the prevention and treatment of brain tumours.

It aims to raise at least £7million per year.
