BCB planning application withdrawn

A TOCKWITH waste company has withdrawn its controversial application to build an £18m energy-from-waste incinerator.

BCB Environmental on the Marston Moor Business Park says it will review its options following talks with the Environment Agency over its plans to build a waste treatment plant to burn rubbish and turn it into electricity.

BCB Managing Director Phil Boardman said: "We have withdrawn our planning application while we review technology options that will enable us to deliver the scheme with minimal environmental impact.

"This will require a new application and we remain convinced that energy from waste is the sensible, environmentally-responsible way to generate sustainable electricity and reduce the volume of waste that is sent to landfill."

The proposed plant had caused fierce local opposition among nearby Tockwith residents who fear it could damage their health.

Harrogate Borough Councillor, John Savage (Marston Moor) said he was delighted to hear the application had been withdrawn.

"The Tockwith Residents Association and the parish council have fought long and hard against this .

"And North Yorkshire County Council's planners have been straight down the line with all parties involved."
