Support for hall: Saturday's lunchtime choral concert at All Saints' Church, Barwick, enabled members of the church's Monday Ladies' Fellowship to raise £200 for the village hall roof appeal fund. Entries invited: ‘Don’t be shy. Why not have a go at entering something in the show this year. You never know, you might win!’ That’s the message from Geoff Thornton, Secretary of Barwick-in- Elmet Horticultural Society, to anyone thinking about submitting an entry for the society’s 45th annual show, to be held at the village hall on Saturday, September 4. Fourteen classes will be open to non-members. As well as the ever-popular classes for flowers, fruit and veg there will also be prizes for handicrafts, painting and photography. Entry forms are now available from the Village Stores or from society members.
Historical Society: An evening of nostalgia, looking at life in Leeds during the forties, fifties and sixties, will begin Barwick-in-Elmet Historical Society’s new season of meetings next month. ‘Down Memory Lane’ will be presented by guest speaker Keith Barber on Wednesday, September 1 at the John Rylie Centre, starting at 7.30pm. Membership of the society costs 5 for the whole year and new members are always welcomed. The latest issue of the society’s newsletter, The Barwicker, includes revelations about a ‘sensational breach of marriage promise’ court case involving a Victorian schoolmaster in the village!
Alliterative announcement: Friday Family Fun for the Under Fives will start on Friday, September 10 in All Saints’ Church, Barwick, at 2pm. This is a new group in the village, offering stories, songs and refreshments for all the family. Please contact (0113) 281-1242 for more information.
Confirmation opportunity: The Vicar of Barwick and Scholes, Rev Andy Nicholson, is planning to begin a confirmation class in the Autumn. Anyone interested is invited to call him on (0113) 289 2437. Confirmation is open to anyone aged 10 or over and is a chance for individuals to say they want to be a part of the Christian community.
