Access group call to back scheme
A campaigner for easy access around Wetherby is calling for people to thank the businesses who have backed the scheme.
Bairbre McKendrick says some shops have signed up to the Rest Easy project where shoppers, who suffer disabilities or who are elderly, can take a break by having a sit down or access to the premises is easy to gain.
“We would like people to nominate the businesses who have followed the scheme to thank them for making their shop accessible,” said the Kirk Deighton mum.
The Wetherby Access group organiser said a number of firms and organisations have signed up for the Rest Easy scheme including Wetherby Methodist Church on Bank Street where people could go and have a sit down.
“We do need more businesses to join the scheme as we don’t have enough.”
Two of the group’s next targets are encouraging firms to instal induction loops for the hard of hearing and pull along trolleys in supermarkets to replace the carry baskets and improving the Shambles public toilets for disabled.
