Wetherby is set to have extra sparkle this year after a celebrity switch on of the Christmas lights next month.

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats player Richard Mathers and ITV Calendar presenter Christine Talbot will be present at a special event on November 21 to launch seasonal festivities.

A host of entertainment including dance routines, live music, Father Christmas and market stalls will be on show, based around the Town Hall.

Mandy Wharton of the Christmas Lights volunteer team said: “So many businesses have backed us with sponsorship, which shows they are proud to have their names associated with such a lovely town, or given generous raffle prizes as a donation.

“But however big or small, we can only say thank you and lets be proud of our switch on this year and make it an even bigger event next year.”

She added that it was the first year in a long time that a switch on event of this level had been staged in Wetherby.

“We hope it will be a memorable evening and festive season to be proud of.”

The market will be open from 5-8pm and the lights will be switched on about 7.15pm.
