Wetherby racecourse is gearing up to expect bumper crowds at their two-day meeting on Boxing Day Friday and Saturday, writes racing tipster Jeff Garlick.

The two days are the start of the William Hill Winter Festival that continues at Catterick on Sunday and Doncaster the following day.

It’s a tradition for many to get wrapped up and to catch the action at Wetherby where the gates open at 10:00am, with mulled wine and mince pies being served for the ‘early birds’ on Boxing Day.

The racing action starts at 12:35 on Friday with the feature race being the Rowland Meyrick Chase, won last year by Sue Smith’s Cloudy Too.

Yorkshire trainers have provided the winner of this race for the last three years with Malton’s Malcolm Jefferson having the other two.

His 2012 winner Cape Tribulation is likely to line up however Scottish hope Green Flag, trained by Lucinda Russell, was removed at the last declaration stage.

Racing continues on Saturday where the feature race is the Castleford Handicap Chase.

Venetia Williams has held the right cards in the last two renewals, with victories for Pepite Rose and Drumshambo.
