A Wetherby woman is now both a nurse and a novelist after her first book has been published and put on the shelves.

Gill Belchetz, 53, a pre-assessment nurse at Spire Leeds Hospital, started writing short stories back in university.

But after her dad died of Dementia, Gill decided to gather some of her short stories into a book called A Game of Consequences.

She said: “He was a wonderful man. He was 87 when he died, for most of his life he was fine but in the last 7 years he started to deteriorate.”

Gill has promised to give all her proceeds to the charity, Dementia Forward, in memory of her father.

The book has already sold more than 1,000 copies after it was released in November but Gill is already looking at her next project.

Gill’s publisher Fisher has taken up an option on her second book, which will be due out at the end of next year if all goes well.

A pre-assessment nurse at Spire Leeds Hospital from day to day and a busy novelist at every other opportunity, Gill says she is passionate about both sides of her life.

She said: “I don’t think you have to do one thing or another in life and that’s why I’m passionate about both.

“It’s important to me to still be in nursing.”
