After 60 years of marriage, a Wetherby couple are celebrating their anniversary this month.
In true diamond fashion, Olive and Derek Biscombe, who married in August 1954, received the special card from the Queen.
The pair were married at St Wilfrid’s Church in Halton, and have been to Center Parcs in Sherwood for a long weekend break to celebrate the happy 60 years that followed.
Originally meeting at Osmanthorpe YMCA, Olive described the scene.
She said: “I was 14 and he was 15. It was an instant hit more or less, so we have been going with one another for a long long time and now we have a lovely card from the Queen.
“We honeymooned in Blackpool because in thosedays you did go to Blackpool.
“I have lots of treasured memories. When the children were born is one of my favourites and when the grandchildren were born is another.
“Now we have a great granddaughter, and that is lovely too.
“When my first granddaughter was born it was broadcast on Radio Aire because that was the only way I could let my husband know. There were no mobile phones then.”
Olive and Derek have two sons, Richard and John, six grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
Including much of their family, 19 people accompanied the couple on their trip, where Olive said they did everything on offer.
Rounding off the great achievement of 60 years of married life, Olive said: “It isn’t many who get to 60 nowadays.”
