Campaigners say a reduction in the number of homes planned for a Wetherby development will not help traffic levels in the town.
Developer Belway Homes has cut the amount of housing proposed for Spofforth Hill from 400 to 325.
But spokesman for the objectors Jim Walton said: “In our opinion Wetherby traffic levels could eventually choke the town; particularly when taking into account other proposed major developments in the Wetherby district (including Thorp Arch - 2,000) and Harrogate, which have not yet been included in the traffic assessments.”
He said Belway’s modelled traffic figures indicate that the level of traffic using the mini roundabout junctions in the area will increase by at least 20 per cent by the end of 2018.
But the company claims these can be reduced by 10 to 13 per cent by persuading residents to walk, cycle and take the bus, instead of using their cars.
Mr Walton added: “The Wharfe bridge currently has over 21,000 vehicle movements a day, according to the Town Council.
“This we estimate, will increase to at least 25,000 by the end of 2018.
“Traffic levels will continue to rise between 2019 and 2023 as many houses continue to be built in the district, but no estimate is made for traffic increases after 2018.
“We believe that this is a critical omission.
“There is a real danger of a decision being made on this proposal in isolation, without carrying out a comprehensive traffic survey which takes into account the affect on Wetherby of every development in the entire district and Harrogate.”
“It would be a travesty if this were to happen.
“Our councillors and MP should be asking Leeds to ensure there is a proper traffic survey covering the next 10 years, before it is too late.”
Leeds City Council last Thursday stated that proposals for 70,000 new homes across the authority was vital to growth.
The 15-year development vision is currently with a Government planning inspector who is to report back soon.
Objections to the Spofforth Hill proposal can be made until March 7.
