Generous residents have been answering an appeal for toys to give to needy children this Christmas.

Wetherby Baptist Church organisers David and Lynne Dawson said over 80 gifts were donated to their last Memorial Gardens collection last Saturday, bringing the total to 234 so far.

David added: “Wetherby Methodist Church have also kindly arranged to hold a special Gift Service next Sunday morning for the benefit of the Toy Appeal, so we should end with a very respectable total.”

This year the scheme was expanded to Tadcaster with the help of the Salvation Army.

Unwrapped toys and gifts, valued at £5-£15, can be left at the shop collection points, Wetherby - Fantasia, Treasures Toys, Castlegate Roys, Raynors Opticians, The Cutprice Bookshop; Tadcaster - Calcaria Carpets, Needlecase, Tykes Tearooms, Post Office Stutton Road until tomorrow.

David thanked all those involved in the second appeal and added: “Above all thanks to the generosity of local people who can still find a little extra for someone worse off than themselves even in these trying financial times.”
