Tadcaster unites for bridge re-opening party

Hundreds of Tadcaster residents have turned out for a special party to celebrate the re-opening of the town's famous bridge.

Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu even blessed the structure and the River Wharfe beneath it during a ceremony.

The bridge recently re-opened to traffic after a year-long closure following flood damage, during which Tadcaster was effectively split in two.

The all-day event lasts from 11am to 8pm and will feature entertainment such as a fireworks display, classic cars, a stilt walker and a medieval market.

There are even copies of a limited edition book commemorating the bridge saga on sale in the town today.

Ironically, the bridge is closed throughout the day to allow the celebrations to take place safely.
