YoungsterS who took part in a sponsored read have raised more than £3,000 over the summer holidays - reading almost 1500 books altogether.
Lady Elizabeth Hastings’ Primary School in Collingham took part in the challenge to help raise funds as part of a refurbishment of the Key Stage Two classrooms and toilets.
The facilities, which are the original ones from when the building was built, are, in the word of the pupils, “old, cramped and smelly.”
Some 89 pupils at the school took part in the reading challenge.
The winning class received more than 150 books, many signed by authors.
The prizes also included signed Harry Potter photographs, cinema tickets and theme park tickets for the youngsters.
Headteacher Briony Robertson said: “The response from the pupils was fantastic.
“And we are delighted that the sponsored read not only raised £3,000 but encouraged the children to read so many books over the summer holidays.”
The headteacher added: “We would like to thank all the children’s authors, celebrities and local companies who provided such great support.”
A further £13,000 is now needed to complete the £21,000 refurbishment project, the school said.
