All Saints Church Spofforth: the service on Sunday, September 16 will be holy communion at 10.30am.

Spofforth Seniors: coffee morning will be on Tuesday, September 18 10-11.30am at the Long Memorial Hall. The group would like to be associated with the many tributes to Joan Surrall who has left the village to be with her son, Peter and his family at Malvern. Joan was a regular attender at the group and also coordinated the monthly lunch. Pat Lee will take over this role. Her number is 01937 590261.

Spofforth with Stockeld Parish Council: will meet on Tuesday, September 18 at 7.30pm in the Long Memorial Hall.

All Saints Church Clock: is striking the hour on a regular basis again. Barry Nickels, the churchwarden has issued an apology. The small but essential part was in hand at the beginning of June but, despite several contacts, the repairer was not able to put the clock right until after the Jubilee. The clock was installed in 1818. It is the second clock and a survey in 1777 remarked that the church had ‘four good bells and a bad clock’. Barry should not apologise; without his hard work we would probably not have a working clock anyway.

Kerbside Recycling: at Spofforth will be on Friday, September 14. Green waste in the brown bins; plastic bottles in one black container and glass, tins and foil in the other; paper and thin cardboard in the blue bag. Big cardboard boxes should be taken to the amenity tip.

Olympic Bell Ringing: Alan Carter thanks everyone who turned up to ring the bells at Spofforth Church on Friday, July 27 to mark the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games. Apparently, they rang for a full 20 minutes.
