St. Paul’s Church: although the Mayfest committee are no longer organising an actual Mayfest day celebration, the committee have not disbanded and are having four separate events throughout the year. The first of these was the Brass Band concert which took place on Saturday, May 4, in St. Paul’s Church. The band this year was the Knaresborough Silver Band instead of the Harrogate Brass Band. There has been a Knaresborough Silver Band for over 150 years. The band was introduced by David Parker and he explained the difference between a brass band and a silver band. Mainly it seemed to be the colour and metal of the instruments which make a slightly a different sound. It sounded pretty good to me and very much like a brass band. They had a very varied repertoire even playing the theme from Star Wars. The conductor explained he had to play it on that particular day because ‘May the 4th be with you’, there were groans from the audience. The youngest member of the band 13 year old Luke, was very busy on the drums which he played very well. David thanked the band for their superb concert. After being entertained by this excellent band everyone went to the village hall for a pie and pea supper. The next event to be organised by the Mayfest committee is a Champagne and Strawberry Fayre. This will be held on Saturday, July 6 2-5pm in the village hall. There will be entertainment by the Night Owls Jazz Band and stalls with face painting (free), refreshments, bookstall, organised Children’s activities, plants, nail painting, photographic display, beaded jewellery, cards and prints, free-fun bingo for all the family - and a luxury hamper to be won. Tickets are £5, accompanied children free, from Brian 0113 265 7282 — brianwatson99@hotmail.com or David 0113 225 2223 — mr.dtp@ntlworld.com
