Shadwell Village Hall Quiz: the January quiz night was held on January 25. Despite the weather there were seven teams in attendance. The questions were set by Liz and Gloria. The snow started at about 7pm and by the time the quiz ended there was a good covering of snow. Most of the people had walked to the hall so it wasn’t a problem getting home. For the car drivers it was a slow progress through the village. The new rule for the quiz is that the losing team set the questions for the next one so Jenny and Victor Benson’s team will be doing the questions for the quiz on March 22.

Burn’s Night: the village hall committee held the annual Burn’s night supper on Saturday, January 26. The numbers had dropped drastically from previous years and because of the heavy snowfall on the Friday night even more people cancelled. In the end there were only 28 people at the supper. But despite this everyone had a good time. Douglas Thompson started the evening with the address to the Haggis and the whisky toast, this was followed by the serving of the supper, haggis and neeps followed by roast beef and Yorkshire puddings. The supper finished with shortbread and coffee. The first speech was from John Weatherell, the traditional toast to the Immortal memory of Robbie Burns. John’s speech was very interesting and funny with lots of amusing anecdotes about the famous man. Norman Taylor proposed the toast to the Lassies which was equally funny. Norman’s wife Pamela gave the response and she gave as good as she got with many jokes which had everyone helpless with laughter. When the speeches had finished there was time for some Scottish dancing and one or two joined in but most of the guests were happy to chat to old and new friends. Thanks were given to David Ford for the excellent meal. The raffle and supper raised over £200 for the village hall and this will be put towards the redecoration of the hall which is to be carried out in the near future. The next village hall fund raising event is the murder mystery evening which is to be held on Saturday March 2. There will be a murder mystery play and a three course dinner. More information and tickets will be available soon.
