Burn’s Night Supper: the annual Burn’s Night Supper will be held on Saturday, January 26 in the village hall, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are now available at £17 from Gloria Ford on 01132 663883 or email gloriaford@hotmail.co.uk. The ticket price is the same as last year and anyone who attended before will know this is a good night out. The evening will open with the Address to the Haggis which will be served with ‘neeps’ and a dram of whisky. The meal will follow with roast beef and all the trimmings or salmon for the non-meat eaters. Coffee and shortbread biscuits will be served at the end of the meal. It is hoped there will be the usual speeches and fun including a sing-along of Scottish songs and dancing if there is time. This is a fun evening so if you have never been before why not give it a try?

Quiz night: the first of the quiz nights for 2013 starts on Friday, January 25 in the village hall at 7.30pm. Tickets are £4 and this includes a light supper. The quiz questions will be set this month by Liz Parrish and Gloria Ford. Teams of six are welcome but anyone without a team can still attend there is always room for one or two people in the smaller groups.

Shadwell in Bloom: the SIB committee are organising a Casino Night at the Red Lion (with kind permission of Richard Hicks), on Saturday, January 19 7.30pm for 8pm. Tickets are available for £10 this includes a welcome drink and canapés and some fun chips (not the edible kind). Further chips can be bought during the evening. A fun casino is very simple, at the beginning of the evening the initial fun money is given out. This is then taken to the casino table of your choice and exchanged for chips. Bets are made with these chips. At the end of the evening a count is taken and the person who won the most chips is declared the winner and awarded a prize. The best thing about a fun casino evening is that you get all the fun without the risks. There will be an auction and raffle. Money raised from this event is in aid of SIB.

Christmas Tree: the village Christmas tree was kindly donated by the owner of the Village Golf course at Wike and it made a very colourful and attractive addition to the Shadwell during Christmas. Thanks are extended to the Village Golf for this kind donation.
