Wetherby youngster Jacob Barritt is one of 131 lucky winners in the whole of the UK to find a super rare Mr Gold LEGO® Minifigure in the global ‘Willy Wonka’ style competition which marks the 10th Minifigure series from the brand.
The day Mr Gold was discovered, seven-year-old Jacob was on his way to a close family member’s funeral.
Knowing that Jacob was quite upset, his parents took him to visit the Castlegate Toys store on the High Street to buy LEGO-loving Jacob a minifigure to brighten his spirits before the day ahead.
A spokesman for LEGO said: “Jacob was thrilled when he opened his gold blind bag to see a Mr Gold staring back at him – and saw this as a sign that his late uncle was watching over him.”
From Wetherby to Washington, 682 Mr Gold Minifigures have been found from across the globe so far, with 4,318 still to be discovered.
Jacob’s Father, Noel said: “Jacob is so excited to be one of the few people in the UK to have found a rare Mr Gold LEGO Minifigure!
“He is completely LEGO mad and this surprise find on a last minute trip to the local toy shop really made Jacob’s day.
“He will never part with Mr Gold, the minifigure holds such sentimental value to him. He really is delighted!”
Nish Kanabar, a partner at Castlegate Toys, Wetherby said he was thrilled that one of his customers found the gold coloured character.
“It’s really lovely to see Jacob win such a unique prize!”
A LEGO spokesperson said: “Jacob is only one of 105 lucky winners to get hold of a rare Mr Gold in the UK.
“We are so pleased a LEGO fan has won the ultimate prize for a Minifigure collector and the lovely story around how Jacob came to find his Mr Gold, really is heartwarming.
“We are so happy that Mr Gold managed to cheer his day. May the luck continue in the surrounding region!”
To help locate all of the 5,000 Mr Gold Minifigures, LEGO has created a global online mapping system where winners can upload their details on to the world map.
