The year began with the unveiling of a radical new masterplan which aimed to transform Harrogate town centre and make it more viable for the future.
The strategy plan, commissioned by Harrogate Borough Council (HBC) at a cost of £50,000, included a raft of ideas, from further pedestrianisation of much of the central part of the town to the creation of a new visitor attraction
The National Farmers Union warned that dairy farming in the Harrogate district faced one of its biggest crises yet, as it emerged that nearly half of all farmers in North Yorkshire have left the industry since 2002.
Emergency department services in Harrogate are “exceptionally busy”, the hospital trust warned, urging residents only to visit with serious injuries or illnesses. Extra measures were in place to cope with the situation.
