RESIDENTS have spoken of their disappointment at the temporary closure of Deighton Bar post office this week.

The post office (pictured), which shut last Tuesday, closed after the owner resigned as Subpostmaster from the community post office on Aire Road, Wetherby.

Kirk Deighton resident John Lees, 77, said the closure was a great “loss to the area”.

He said: “I went down there every Monday and Tuesday to collect my pension.

“It is very disappointing, now elderly people like myself will have to stand in all weathers waiting for a bus into Wetherby to go to the post office there.

“I do hope that it will be re-opened again soon under new ownership as there is a definite gap in the market for this.

“It is a good local community facility and such a shame to see it shut at the moment.”

Another resident, who didn’t want to be named, said she was “very upset” about the closure, after using the services at the site for 29 years.

“A lot of elderly people round here used it to get their pensions and sort their bank accounts each week.

“They will now have to use the post office in Wetherby instead which is further away and harder to travel to.

“I think a lot of people in the community feel as disappointed as I am about it. It is a real shame.”

A post office spokesman said the closure would only be “temporary”.

A statement said: “Regrettably, following the resignation of the Subpostmaster, we had no option but to temporarily close Deighton Bar post office branch on Tuesday 17 January.

“Post Office Ltd would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience as a result of this unavoidable temporary closure.

“Post Office Ltd is committed to providing post office services in this area and would like to assure our customers that every effort is being made to restore service as soon as possible.

“We are currently looking at all options so as to resume post office services in this area as quickly as possible, it is too early to say if this will be in the existing premises.”
