Collingham-based physiotherapist Mat Unwin is to compete in the gruelling 12-hour endurance running race Hell on the Humber on August 18 to raise funds for Leukaemai and Lymphoma Research. To sponsor visit www.justgiving.com/MTUnwin.

Participants run back and forth along a four-mile circuit of the Humber Bridge as many times as they can between seven in the evening until seven the next morning.

The 34-year-old is hoping to cover a personal best of 70 miles and in doing so raise vital funds Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

Mat said: “Over recent years, I have taken part in a number of running events from 10km up to 50-mile ultra marathons around South Yorkshire. But Hell on the Humber is a whole different challenge.

Me and the other competitors will be facing unpredictable weather, fatigue and sleep deprivation – it’s a mind game as much as the physical difficulty.

“It’ll be tough, painful and I’m sure the novelty will have worn off when it’s raining at 3am, but it’s for a great cause.

“Through my work I meet a lot of people who suffer with pain and illness on a daily basis. One night of pain’s not too much to complain about really.

“It also means I get a first-hand insight into the aches and niggles that affect some of my sport injury patients, which helps me as a physio.”

Supporters can also sponsor Mat by leaving donations at his practice within Collingham Dental Care at Hastings Court in Collingham.
