New life is being injected in an annual drive to raise cash to beat cancer.

Beverley Firth, 37, has signed up to the task of organising the Bramham Fun Run after previous organisers, Boston Spa couple Ann and Jeff Newton stepped down after 17 years with the event.

The 37-year-old from Garforth said explained her motivation: “My grandad died from liver and bowel cancer in 2012 and I struggled an awful lot to deal with the loss.

“A friend of mine said why not turn the grief into something positive so I started running to raise cash for Cancer Research UK.

“I was the sort of jogger who went out to lose a couple of pounds but because of my grandad I got better.

“Last year I completed a half marathon every month and raised just over £4,000 for Cancer Research.

“Because of the fundraising I have done I was chosen as an ambassador and am one of only 26 to be chosen by the charity to run the London Marathon in April.

“Then they asked me if I would like to organise the Bramham Fun Run.”

She explained that events like Bramham were key to fighting cancer.

“Thanks to work by organisations like Cancer Research we can improve survival or help prolong life long enough to say goodbye properly.”

Event sponsor Andrew Beadnall of Wetherby estate agents Beadnall Copley welcomed the new recruit to the team.

Mr Beadnall said: “We are again delighted to have been contacted by Cancer Research UK to be their main sponsors for the Bramham Park Fun Run.

“And this year the event is being organised by the new event organiser who is Beverley Firth of Leeds.

“She is a tireless supporter of Cancer Research UK and we are very committed to making this year’s event the best yet.

“We were recently honoured to receive a certificate thanking Beadnall Copley for raising £266,500 and this has spurred us on even more to now break the £300,000 barrier.”

AV Matrix have again offered to provide staging and sound systems.

Beverley said: “The Print Works in Wetherby are providing printing and as always Martin Shaw of Martin Shaw Fitness will be our warm-up presenter on the day.

“We have set ourselves a target of attracting over a thousand entrants for the 5 and 10k events which take place in the grounds of Bramham Park.”

The Bramham Park Fun Run will take place on October 4. Visit www.bramhamparkfunrun.org.uk/
