RACECOURSE officials have declared the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase meeting a success with Saturday attracting 10,100 race goers.

The bet365 Charlie Hall Chase was hailed as the ‘classiest race of the season so far’ with the winner at 7/1 being Weird Al, ridden by Timmy Murphy and trained by Donald McCain.

Chief executive Jonjo Sanderson said: “It is always difficult to predict attendance figures.

“Our advance sales, especially for Saturday were up, the weather forecast was good, and we had some fantastic entries for the big races, so the signs were there that we could expect a good crowd and we were obviously delighted that we hit the 10,000 mark on Saturday.

“Despite such a large crowd, we had no issues of anti-social behaviour, there was a good atmosphere on course that was remarked upon by many and everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the day’s racing.

“However, as with any crowd of this size there will always be a minority who unfortunately cause issues in the locality and hopefully the majority of our racegoers who went on into the town enjoyed their evening.”

And Mr Sanderson added that because of good feedback from racegoers they will be running the shuttle bus service for their next meeting on November 12.

“We trialled the shuttle bus service with local firm Eddie Brown Tours Ltd, and approximately 150 racegoers used the bus in both directions, which was great for its first run.”

Police said despite the increase of people, the town remained “relatively peaceful” with only three arrests.
