YOUNGSTERS at the Bramham Moor Junior Mounted Games Team are celebrating after reigning in the title of National Champions.

The local team were up against 23 of the best squads from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland when they competed at the Pony Club Championships near Nottingham.

Spokesman Anne Moscrop said: “It was an exciting and very nerve racking competition, especially for the parents and supporters watching from the side lines.

“Going into the last race, the team had a narrow lead but needed to finish no lower than third to be sure of winning.

“However, they did it in style and took first place and everyone was so proud to see them on the podium, complete with sashes and rosettes and a large cup.”

The team, of ten and 11-year-olds who have been members for some years, is trained by Diane Brown and consists of Molly Robinson from Newton Kyme, Emilia Proctor from Little Ribston, Amy Hunt from Crossgates, Anna Jessop from Scholes and Molly Beadle from Shadwell.

Anne added that the team have been training weekly since January and competing since March.

“They won their two qualifying rounds to take a place in the final.

“Both they and their ponies - Ralph, Rodney, Toffee, Cameo and Lucky - have worked very hard this year under Diane’s guidance.”
