This year’s concert by Tewit Youth Band at the Starbeck Methodist Church was another resounding success, with the band playing to a packed, appreciative, audience.

Playing with the commitment that makes the band sound far better than the average age of fifteen and a half would indicate, was with the confidence that won them a Silver award in their class at the National Youth Brass Band Championships last year.

The program included traditional marches and not so traditional Toccata by J. S. Bach, which they accomplished to the delight, and surprise, of everyone.

With some Jazz and mellow music thrown in it was obvious the band members really enjoyed the experience. For a finale they played an extremely difficult arrangement of Riverdance, with soloists Peter Clark and Dan Hartley, along with the percussion group, getting the audience foot tapping.

A spokesman from Starbeck Methodist Church commented: “Musical Director, Dave Smith, has brought a new direction to the band, and for his humorous introductions.

The solo performances were memorable along with the small ensemble groups working in harmony with the whole band. The splitting of musicians to each end of our church provided a most unusual and very effective way of presenting brass music.”

Being a local organisation, Tewit are always looking to encourage young people from 6 to 18 to take up a brass instrument and join this happy group.

Players of any ability are welcome and instruments are usually provided on free loan. If interested, just call 01423 562710 for more information.
