Mascots from far and wide are due to descend on Wetherby Racecourse next month.

The ninth Mascot Gold Cup Day, on April 13, is set to raise funds for charity and this year there will be a few changes.

New for 2014 is the Wetherby Onesie Runsie, a new race for people wearing Onesies.

Andrew Wood, organiser of the event said: “For years now we’ve been contacted by people wanting to run the Mascot Gold Cup in a onesie and we’ve said no as it is strictly for mascots, but such has been the boom in people owning onesies we thought let’s just have a separate race for them.”

Organised by Sue Ryder Care, the mascot race has become a feature part of Family Day at the racecourse and brings together business, individuals and charity groups for an entertaining afternoon in support of good causes.

Mascots come from far and wide, across the county and beyond with an array of characters including well-known professional mascots such as Beefy and Lamby, Ronnie the Rhino, Scunny the Bunny and various representatives from charity groups and businesses such as The Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Keir Group, Redrow Homes.

The Mascot Gold Cup is contested on the racecourse over six small fences, in the final furlong (220 yards) in front of the cheering raceday crowd.

There are presentations to the mascot judged as ‘Best in Parade’ and this year there is a special presentation to the mascot who best represents this year’s theme; “Tour de France - Grand depart Yorkshire 2014”.

Last year over 80 larger than life furry characters joined in the fun at the world’s largest mascot race.

Anyone who is interested in joining in but doesn’t have a mascot can adopt a costume for the day.

Entry costs £40 which include two complimentary passes to the Wetherby Racecourse family race day.

As well as action packed racing, there will be lots of family entertainment in the Centre of Course Enclosure including The National Festival Circus, inflatables, petting farm and barrel train.

A free shuttle bus will be running between Wetherby town and the Racecourse during: 12.30-2pm and from 5-6pm.

For more information on the shuttle bus rides, tickets etc, visit www.wetherbyracing.co.uk or call 01937 582035.
