In a joint effort a husband and wife team, Alan and Sue Haines have raised a staggering £6,193.00 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance charity.
Both Alan and Sue have been captains of the Mens and Ladies Sections of Wetherby Golf Club for the past 12 months, a unique appointment as in the 104 years of the club’s existence there has never been a husband and wife as captains in the same year.
The fund raising started with a Murder Mystery Night dinner in the club-house with ten or so of the club members in the cast.
This raised £266 and the rest followed on with a number of highly successful functions including a free dance night with member Phil Smith’s band - Remnants and just a bucket going around collecting £700.
“Most of the money was raised among the 700 plus membership, including donations from the various golfing sections within the club and at Sue Haines final night as Lady Captain, Yorkshire Air Ambulance fund raiser Kelly was invited to dine with 70 lady members and accept the cheque,” said club spokesman John Lelean.
Sue thanked members for their generosity, explaining how the air ambulances operate with one based at RAF Topcliffe and the other at Nostell Priory.
Previously both were based at Leeds/Bradford airport, but now it was easier to cover the whole of the county from the two locations.
This may not be the total sum raised as husband Alan Haines was due to hold his Captain’s Last Night last Friday and would probably squeeze a little more from the guests.
